In the Council of Europe, Azerbaijan will fight against match-fixing

Visit to NATO of Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov spoke before PACE deputies at the summer session of the Assembly on June 23, talking about the priority of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers.

One of the priorities of Azerbaijan in this period will be the fight against corruption. In particular, in late June Baku will host a conference organized jointly with GRECO (Group of States against Corruption) and the International Anti-Corruption Academy.

As anti-corruption, Mammadyarov mentioned struggle against treaty matches in sports.

“In this sense, we are pleased that the Assembly last month gave the green light to the current draft of the Convention against treaty sport competitions, adopted in Baku at the meeting of the Standing Committee of the PACE. Currently it is the turn of the Committee of Ministers,” said Mammadyarov.

He called for the early adoption of the convention by Azerbaijan given the fact that in 2015 Baku is to host European games.

Within the framework of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers the first event in Baku was the organization of the meeting of the coordinators of the Council of Europe Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights.

In October, Baku will host two events – the fourth regional meeting of Ministers on the implementation of the European Higher Education and the Global Forum on Youth Policy, the Minister said.

Note that Mammadyarov also responded to questions from MPs, some of which were related to problems with human rights and political prisoners. However, he did not give specific answers, noting Azerbaijan’s commitment to democracy and the gradual solution of the existing problems.

Six-month presidency of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe began May 14, 2014.
