“Liberation of Shusha is most important military victory in Azerbaijan’s history” – Ahmad Shahidov told TRT World Television

By regaining Shusha, Azerbaijan from a military standpoint, controls the commanding heights above Khankendi, as well as the lifeline, the road that is between Armenia and Khankendi. So, effectively, one could argue that the military phase of the war is over. The Armenian side will maybe fight in a partisan way, but should simply give up and save the lives of its soldiers, go back to the negotiating table and reach a political peace settlement.

In his interview to TRT World Television, Ahmad Shahidov, the head of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, human rights defender, said that Armenia is in a desperate situation and has come to terms with its defeat: “Azerbaijan’s preconditions for starting negotiations have not changed. The Armenian government must officially recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and withdraw all its troops from Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas. Only then can peace talks be possible. Otherwise, the war will continue and Azerbaijan is determined to liberate its lands from occupation. This is the sovereign right of Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan will fight to the end to ensure the security of its internationally recognized borders.”
