Head of AIDHR to attend hearings of PACE on media freedom

Discussions on deaths of Elmar Huseynov and RafiqTagi will be conducted in the framework of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s winter session on January 28

Winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will kick off in Strasbourg, France on January 26. The Assembly which will continue until 30th of January will feature elections to presidency and vice-presidency of PACE, discussions on recent terror attack which took place in France and crises in Ukraine.

Session of PACE Committees on Culture, Science, Education and Media will be held under the title of “Protection of media freedom in Europe”. In this part of the Assembly FLEGO Gvozden Srećko, Croatian Member of Parliament will read his report. The report will include brutally killed Azerbaijani journalists Elmar Huseynov (2005) and Rafiq Tagi (2011) cases. Besides, the report will encompass the deaths of Paul Klebnikov (2004) and Anna Politkovskaya (2006) in the Russian Federation, Dada Vujasinović (1994) and Milan Pantić (2001) in Serbia, Hrant Dink (2007) in Turkey, Martin O’Hagan (2001) in the United Kingdom and Georgiy Gongadze (2000) and Vasil Klementiev (2010) in Ukraine. It’s expected that special resolution will be enacted in conjunction with the aforementioned report.

Ahmad Shahidov, Head of the Azerbaijani Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (AIDHR) will also attend discussions to be held during the PACE’s winter session. Mr. Shahidov is planning to hold meetings with Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.
