Popular Front Party Activist Elvin Abdullayev Arrested for 4 Months

The Khatai District Court of Baku on January 10 selected a preventive measure of arrest for the activist of the Youth Committee of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Elvin Abdullayev for a period of 4 months. He is charged under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale) of the Criminal Code, which provides for a penalty of imprisonment from 5 to 12 years.

A member of the Youth Committee of PFPA Elvin Abdullayev has been arrested. As the Youth Committee of the Popular Front Party stated, Abdullayev was abducted by unknown men on January 8 after passing the exam at the university.

He called home and said that he had successfully passed the exam, but some time later he wrote on his Facebook page that he was arrested.

However, the young man’s mother was not given official information about his location in detention. According to unofficial information, he was taken to the 39th police station of the Sabail district, and then to the Baku Main Police Office. Now he is being held in the investigative prison in the Narimanov district.

According to his mother, in the 39th police station she was told that a criminal case on charges of drugs was initiated against her son. However, the investigator told her he did not know exactly what article he is accused of.

Abdullayev’s rights will be protected by the lawyer Bahruz Bayramov, who told Turan that the investigation is conducted by the Main Police Department of Baku.

The lawyer believes that on Saturday the court will order to arrest Abdullayev and he will be most probably charged under Article 234 (illegal drugs).

The Youth Committee of PFPA believes that the young man is persecuted for political reasons. In addition to active participation in the Youth Committee of the Popular Front Party, he also published sharply critical articles about the authorities on Facebook.

Abdullayev became the eighth activist of PFPA thrown into jail.
