U.S. Special Envoy’s Moscow visit draws international attention – Dr. Ahmad Shahidov speaks to ARB24 from Washington DC

The upcoming visit of U.S. President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow has captured the attention of international media and political analysts. According to the White House, Witkoff will travel to the Russian capital on a diplomatic mission after concluding his trip to Israel. Although the exact agenda of the visit has not been made public, the timing suggests the beginning of a new phase in diplomacy amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The visit is expected to take place just as the 10-day ceasefire ultimatum issued by President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 22 is approaching its deadline. Many see this as part of Washington’s broader diplomatic pressure strategy. Witkoff is expected to deliver Trump’s message to the Kremlin and discuss issues related to Gaza, Iran, and broader regional security.

Speaking to ARB24 TV from Washington, political analyst Dr. Ahmad Shahidov assessed the importance and background of the visit. He stated:

“Even though this visit has not yet taken place, it has already succeeded in creating significant informational and diplomatic tension. This is not just another diplomatic trip. The Trump administration aims to demonstrate the seriousness of its ultimatum while keeping the door open for direct dialogue with Putin. Witkoff’s appointment is no coincidence – he is a close associate of Trump, and this visit is intended to deliver the message ‘outside official channels, directly.’”

According to Dr. Shahidov, the visit could also provide an opportunity to explore possible U.S.-Russia coordination in the Middle East, particularly in the context of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel:

“The U.S. wants to engage with Russia on matters concerning Gaza and Iran as well. Witkoff is, in that sense, a behind-the-scenes player in Middle East diplomacy.”

The political commentator also noted that if the visit fails to yield results, Washington may resort to more aggressive measures:

“If Putin fails to take concrete steps toward a ceasefire, the Trump administration may respond with new sanctions or heavier arms support to Ukraine. In that sense, Witkoff’s Moscow visit can be seen as a final diplomatic opportunity.”
