U.S. strategy on the Zangezur Corridor and rising political tensions in Armenia – Dr. Ahmad Shahidov speaks to Baku TV

Participating in the U.S. State Department’s regular press briefing in Washington, D.C., journalist and human rights defender Dr. Ahmad Shahidov spoke to Baku TV about the Zangezur Corridor, regional geopolitical dynamics, and the U.S. government’s stance on the issue.

Dr. Shahidov said that during the briefing, he posed a question to State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce regarding the future status of the Zangezur Corridor and the official U.S. approach. He noted that last week, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack stated that it might be possible for the management of the corridor to be granted to an American company for a 100-year term. This statement caused significant concern in the region, particularly in Russia and Iran.

In response, Tammy Bruce emphasized that the matter falls directly under the authority of the White House and that any final decision would be made at the presidential level. Nevertheless, she reaffirmed the U.S. government’s support for peace initiatives in the South Caucasus and the establishment of a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. She also referred to previous statements by President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stressed that regional communication and infrastructure projects would contribute to peace and cooperation. Bruce added that an official written statement on the U.S. position regarding the Zangezur Corridor will be released in the coming days.

In the interview, Dr. Ahmad Shahidov also drew attention to recent developments in Armenia, highlighting rising domestic tensions, growing anti-government protests, and the possibility of continued instability leading up to the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 2026. He warned that such a situation could pose a serious threat to the peace agreement process in the region.
