Could a final peace agreement be signed at the White House? – Dr. Ahmad Shahidov speaks to ARB24 Television from Washington DC

On Friday, August 8, a pivotal meeting will take place at the White House in Washington, D.C., initiated and hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyanare expected to meet for direct talks, in what is being described as a critical stage in efforts to resolve the decades-long conflict in the South Caucasus through political means.

According to White House officials, the parties have already reached preliminary agreements, mostly during previous negotiations in Abu Dhabi with the mediation of the UAE. The upcoming tripartite meeting in Washington aims to formalize those understandings. The U.S. administration is placing special emphasis on the process, presenting it both as a regional peace initiative and a personal diplomatic success for President Trump.

Speaking from Washington to ARB24 Television, political analyst Dr. Ahmad Shahidov said the meeting at the White House represents a historic opportunity for the South Caucasus, and that the signing of a final peace agreement is very possible.

“Donald Trump is not approaching this process as a routine diplomatic effort, but rather as a matter of personal political will. His goal is to ensure reconciliation between Azerbaijan and Armenia while strengthening the U.S.’s role as a global mediator,” said Dr. Shahidov.

He added that, in addition to the peace document, the parties may also discuss issues such as economic cooperation, opening of borders, and transportation corridors. If an agreement is reached, it could mark the beginning of a new era not just for Azerbaijan and Armenia, but for the entire region.
