Today, in the U.S. state of Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are holding a high-level meeting. The main agenda will focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine, prospects for a ceasefire, and strategic arms control.
Political commentator Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, speaking to Real Television from Washington, emphasized that while the Alaska meeting may not produce a “historic agreement,” it is significant in terms of restarting dialogue between the two sides.
According to Shahidov, Trump aims to use this meeting to launch a process that could eventually pave the way for trilateral talks between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky: “The U.S. side will seek at least to set a format and timeline for continued negotiations. Russia, on the other hand, will try to extract maximum political and military concessions. Ukraine does not want to be sidelined and firmly opposes any territorial concessions.”
Dr. Ahmad Shahidov added that the outcome of the meeting will have strategic implications not only for the U.S. and Russia but also for Europe and Ukraine: “If the parties can agree on even limited de-escalation — such as a partial reduction in military operations — it could lay the groundwork for the next round of talks. Otherwise, a failure scenario and new sanctions could come into play.”
The meeting is being held at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson military facility and is taking place in a one-on-one format with only interpreters present.
