Today in the U.S. state of Alaska, President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a high-level meeting. The main topics of discussion were the ongoing war in Ukraine, prospects for a ceasefire, and issues of strategic arms control.
Washington-based political analyst Dr. Ahmad Shahidov told REAL Television that while the Alaska meeting did not result in a “historic agreement,” it was significant in terms of restarting dialogue between the two sides.
According to Shahidov, Trump aimed to use this meeting to launch the process and pave the way for future trilateral talks involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky:
“The U.S. side will try to at least set a format and a timetable for continued negotiations. Russia, on the other hand, will seek to extract maximum political and military concessions. Ukraine does not want to remain outside the process and firmly rejects any territorial concessions.”
Dr. Ahmad Shahidov added that the outcome of the meeting holds strategic importance not only for the U.S. and Russia but also for Europe and Ukraine:
“If the sides can agree on even limited de-escalation, meaning a partial reduction of military operations, this could create a basis for the next round of talks. Otherwise, a failure scenario and new sanctions could come to the agenda.”
It should be noted that the meeting was held at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in a one-on-one format, attended only by interpreters.
