On August 18, a crucial meeting began at the White House with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders. The main agenda is ending the war in Ukraine and securing long-term peace.
Trump is expected to present Zelensky with proposals put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Alaska summit. These proposals include Ukraine conceding Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia in exchange for U.S. and Western security guarantees.
Zelensky, backed by the European Union and NATO, insists on preserving Ukraine’s territorial integrity and emphasizes that no peace deal should compromise the country’s sovereignty and borders. According to him, the outcome of this meeting will be decisive not only for Ukraine but also for the security and stability of Europe as a whole.
Speaking to ARB24, Washington-based political analyst Ahmad Shahidov stressed that compromise is essential to achieve peace:
“Otherwise, the war may drag on, costing the lives of thousands of innocent people. The United States plays a key mediating role in this process and contributes significantly to global diplomacy aimed at achieving peace.”
According to Ahmad Shahidov, potential concessions on Donetsk and Luhansk could only serve as a means to reach peace, but Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the principles of international law must always remain the foundation.
