Europe proposes buffer zone on the Ukraine–Russia front – Ahmad Shahidov gives extensive interview to ARB24 Television

In Europe, new scenarios regarding the future of the Ukraine–Russia war are being discussed. According to “Politico”, European officials are considering the possibility of establishing a 40-kilometer buffer zone along the front line. This plan is presented as part of a ceasefire or a post-war peace mechanism. However, the proposal implies the risk of territorial concessions for Ukraine, while representing de facto gains for Russia.

Speaking to ARB24 in an extensive interview, political analyst Ahmad Shahidov said that the proposal may appear as a peace initiative on the surface but in reality poses a serious threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty:
“The creation of a buffer zone can be seen as a security guarantee for Ukraine, but it also means legitimizing the occupied territories. For Kyiv, this is an extremely difficult choice.”

According to Shahidov, NATO troops – particularly forces from France and the United Kingdom – taking part in this plan could further deepen the conflict:
“Such a step may transform the war from a regional conflict into a global confrontation. Russia sees this as a red line.”

The analyst also commented on the new sanctions package being prepared by the European Union against Russia. He stressed that while restrictions targeting the energy and financial sectors would shrink Moscow’s capabilities, they could also negatively affect the European economy.

Addressing the Putin–Trump meeting in Alaska, the details of which remain undisclosed, Shahidov added that this indicates the reactivation of secret diplomatic channels between Moscow and Washington:
“The political will in the United States will be the decisive factor in determining the course of the war.”

It should be noted that Ahmad Shahidov, who returned from Washington yesterday, also shared his observations on U.S. foreign policy, press briefings at the State Department and the White House. He further emphasized that the fundamental peace agreement signed at the White House between Azerbaijan and Armenia opens new opportunities for stability in the South Caucasus.
