US–China rivalry will also affect the South Caucasus – Ahmad Shahidov commented on the SCO summit on ARB24 Television

In recent years, the growing political, economic, and military rivalry between the United States and China has become one of the main topics on the international agenda. The military parade held in Beijing, the presentation of modern weapons, and the deepening Russia–China rapprochement indicate that this process has entered a new phase.

At the same time, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in China attracted significant attention. The gathering of world leaders in Beijing demonstrated that China has already become one of the key centers of global diplomacy. The participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the summit was assessed as a clear example of the rising cooperation between the two countries. The strategic partnership agreements signed between Baku and Beijing are among the main pillars of Azerbaijan’s balanced foreign policy.

Speaking on ARB24 Television, political commentator Ahmad Shahidov stated that China is no longer only an economic giant, but also seeks to establish itself as a military power in global politics. According to him, the rapprochement between Russia and China sends a clear message to the West: the world is no longer unipolar.

Ahmad Shahidov recalled that the meeting held on August 8 at the White House in Washington with the participation of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia was an important step towards achieving peace in the South Caucasus. While the US seeks to reduce Russia’s influence in the region, China is simultaneously expanding its economic interests through the “Belt and Road” initiative.

“Azerbaijan, however, is an important partner for both Washington and Beijing and continues to successfully pursue its balanced policy,” Ahmad Shahidov emphasized.

The political commentator also touched upon the strategic significance of the “Trump corridor” discussed in the South Caucasus. According to him, this route will further expand Azerbaijan’s transit opportunities and contribute to strengthening peace and cooperation in the region.

Ahmad Shahidov further added that the US–China confrontation will become increasingly intense. “This rivalry will not remain limited to the Asia-Pacific, but will also extend to regions such as Europe, the Middle East, and the South Caucasus. The main geopolitical axis of the 21st century is the US–China rivalry, which brings both new opportunities and risks for countries like Azerbaijan that pursue a balanced policy,” he noted.
