Dr. Ahmad Shahidov informed the OSCE about early marriages and consanguineous marriages in Azerbaijan

On June 25, a two-day conference on “Tolerance and non-discrimination and gender equality” organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights continued its work in Vienna, the capital of Austria.

At the meeting attended by ambassadors, diplomats and government officials of 57 OSCE member states, the issues of tolerance and non-discrimination and gender equality in the OSCE geography were discussed.

Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, a human rights defender who participated in the meeting, informed about early marriages and consanguineous marriages in Azerbaijan, and talked about the preventive steps taken by the Azerbaijani government in this field. Bringing to the attention of the meeting participants that the Parliament of Azerbaijan has adopted a bill prohibiting consanguineous marriages, the human rights defender noted that early marriages are still common in the regions, especially in rural areas.
