Historic agreement of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova with the EU

Friday, June 27 in Brussels, Ukraine will sign an economic part of the Association Agreement with the EU. The main part of the summit in Brussels started this morning.

EU leaders began to arrive in the EU Council building, known as Justus Lipsius 8 am, UNIAN reports.

According to the agenda, they will first sign an association agreement with Georgia, then – with Moldova, and then with Ukraine.

Recall the two-day EU summit began yesterday, June 26. Before lunch the summit participants heard the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. He described the situation in the country and assessed the situation in the east of Ukraine. This was necessary because developments in Ukraine in the coming hours and days will determine whether Brussels will decide to move to the third stage of sanctions against Russia. It concerns actual economic or financial embargo.

On March 21, Ukraine and the European Union signed the political part of the Association Agreement. The Agreement provides for political association and economic integration of Ukraine with the European Union.

In the case of ratification of the agreement by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the short term, the document can be applied without ratification by all 27 EU member states, which could take several years.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso called historic the signing of association agreements between the EU and Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

“This is a historic moment for these countries. Despite all the difficulties, we will sign agreements with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, and I believe that this is a winning situation for all countries and also for the whole of Europe,” he stressed.
