The public association “Azerbaijan without political prisoners” sent an appeal to Strasbourg, where a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe opened today.
“We appeal to you to pay more attention to the situation in Azerbaijan, where there are about 140 political prisoners, while the country will preside over the Cabinet of Ministers of the Council of Europe for five months,” said in the appeal.
Appointment of the PACE special rapporteur on political prisoners and report on this topic for the next session would help solve this problem, consider the former political prisoners and urge MEPs to make efforts to release political prisoners, stop the persecution of activists, and provide the freedom of assembly and association in Azerbaijan.
“Such actions would help fulfill the obligations of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, as well as the restoration of the image of the Council of Europe which has seriously shaken in recent years,” the statement said.
