Consideration of cassation appeal from Hilal Mamedov postponed

061200081286
Scheduled for June 12, the Supreme Court consideration of the cassation appeal from the editor of the newspaper Tolyshi Sado Hilal Mamedov, sentenced to 5 years in prison, has been postponed.

The reason was the absence of Mamedov at the meeting.

The meeting began with the defense solicited about it, but the judge Inglab Nasirov said Mamedov’s statement about wanting to participate in the meeting and appeal of the lawyers came “too late.”

The judge asked the lawyers if participation of Mamedov was important.

In response, the lawyer Ramiz Mammadov said that the participation of Mamedov was important to provide clarity on a number of issues, as many of his statements to the court in a judicial review have been returned.

The public prosecutor did not mind Mamedov’s participation. In this regard, the meeting was postponed to 11.00 on June 25.

* Mamedov was arrested on June 21, 2012. The Baku Court of Grave Crimes on September 27, 2013 sentenced him to five years in prison, finding him guilty of treason, inciting ethnic hatred and drug trafficking. Mamedov denied the allegations and he believes that he is being persecuted for political reasons. Amnesty International found him a “prisoner of conscience.”
