“One million Azerbaijani refugees are victims of humanitarian disaster” – Ahmad Shahidov spoke about the armenian occupation at the OSCE Warsaw Meeting

On September 21, the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM) of OSCE participating States, organized by OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) continued its work in Warsaw, Poland. Representatives of OSCE participating States, OSCE institutions, and OSCE executive structures, representatives of inter-governmental organizations, legal professionals, representatives of civil society and researchers from 57 participating States took part in discussions.

Taking an active part in discussion on the topic of “Humanitarian issues and other commitments: refugees and displaced persons”, Head of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Shahidov spoke about the conflicts in the South Caucasus region and mentioned the humanitarian consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Noted that one million ethnic Azerbaijanis were driven out from their homes, the Human Rights Defender called the occupied Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts a humanitarian disaster zone and said that the fundamental rights of people living there are violated.

Referring to four UN Security Council resolutions on the immediate release of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas, Head of AIDHR Dr. Ahmad Shahidov said that the Armenian government does not consider international laws and continues its aggressive policy in the region causing humanitarian disaster: “A million people have been facing humanitarian disasters as a result of this policy. Their most fundamental rights were violated, they had to leave their homes, hundreds of Azerbaijanis were captured and taken hostage, and later became victims of human trafficking. Azerbaijan has lost control over these areas and there are reports of trafficking in human beings, dirty money laundering and terrorist activity in those areas. The international community should give legal assessment of the humanitarian disaster in occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and other regions and take preventive measures.”

PS. The Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM) of OSCE participating States is Europe’s largest annual human rights and democracy conference. It is organized every year by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) as a platform for the 57 OSCE participating States, the OSCE Partners for Co-operation, OSCE structures, civil society, international organizations and other relevant actors to take stock of the implementation of OSCE human dimension commitments, discuss associated challenges, share good practices and make recommendations for further improvement.
