“Amnesty initiative of Mehriban Aliyeva is a humanist approach to human rights” – Ahmad Shahidov

Human rights defender: “We will give detailed information on this amnesty act during the meetings and speeches in European institutions”

The announcement of amnesty bill submitted to the Parliament on the Day of Republic, May 28 by Member of Milli Majlis, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva was warmly welcomed by the community. If the project discussed on May 20 will be accepted, it will come into force on June 15. Amnesty will cover 10 thousand prisoners and 3500 persons will be released from prison. Experts say that this initiative will improve the relations between Azerbaijan and the West.

Sharing his thoughts on this amnesty initiative, Head of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Shahidov estimated the initiative of the President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva as a humanist approach to human rights: “Law and humanistic values are associated with each other. It needs to view through the prism of humanity, when someone is punished for a criminal offense. Because the people in prisons are our citizens as well. I think we have enough experience and potential in this field in Azerbaijan. The traditional amnesty decree of the Head of State is a high price for human rights. The First Lady’s amnesty initiatives stand above of all this activity. Because, such kind of amnesty acts cover more people and bring happiness to more families.

Head of AIDHR said that they will give more information about Mehriban Aliyeva’s amnesty initiative in upcoming meetings and speeches in European institutions and stressed the importance of this experience to be used in a number of European countries: “Since September, we will have several meetings and events in the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the UN and the European Parliament. During the events dedicated to human rights and democratic values, we will talk about the human rights in Azerbaijan and will provide detailed information on the amnesty initiative of Mehriban Aliyeva. I think that the Europe’s leading countries should use this experience of Azerbaijan.
