In the trial of Omar Mamedov court rejected the defense motion

omer_memmedovToday the Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Eldar Mikailov continued the trial of a Facebook activist Omar Mamedov.

During the meeting, Mamedov’s lawyer Khalid Bagirov petitioned for the admission of Mamedov’s correspondence with his parents before his arrest to the criminal case.

This correspondence confirms that Mamedov’s prosecution was politically motivated.

Mamedov studied in Turkish Cyprus, and during this period the young man’s father was summoned to the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime Ministry of Internal Affairs in connection with the activities of his son on Facebook. Mamedov’s father was warned that on return his son may be arrested.

And so it happened. On January 20 Mamedov was back on vacation, and on January 24 he was arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

However, the court rejected the defense motion.

The next hearing is scheduled for June 13.

* 19-year-old Omar Mamedov is the leader of the youth movement Akhyn (Current) and member of the Civil Solidarity Party. After his arrest, he was back in the NIDA movement.

Mamedov was active in social networks on the Internet and, in particular, was one of the administrators of the page Lists of AzTV on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pazaztv?fref=ts), which housed cartoons, collages and comments ridiculing vices of the authorities.
