The US Embassy in Azerbaijan put forward Leyla Yunus for one of the most prestigious international awards of the world, For Courage (International Women of Courage Award) established by the US State Department.
This award recognizes outstanding women of the world for their courage and leadership qualities displayed in the struggle for social justice and human rights.
The International Women of Courage Award was established by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2007. Since then it has been awarded to 36 women from 27 countries.
The news at the request of the US government was reported to Leyla Yunus through her lawyer in the remand prison in Kurdakhany, where she has been in custody since the end of July.
Leyla Yunus gave thanks to the US government for nominating her for obtaining this prestigious award. She regards it as a support for not only her activities, but also as an act of support for all those arrested leaders of the human rights movement. Her gratitude was transferred to the US Embassy in Azerbaijan.
Being aske4dto comment on this news the US Embassy noted that selection process for nominees of the Secretary of State’s Women of Courage Award is ongoing. The recipients will be announced at the annual award ceremony in March 2015.
