Head of AIDHR to talk about Azerbaijani hostages at the ICRC Head Office

Ahmad Shahidov held a meeting with Carolina Douiliez, Deputy Chair of Europe and Central Asia Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross

Ahmad Shahidov, Head of the Azerbaijani Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (AIDHR) visited Head Office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva, Switzerland on December 2. Being received by Carolina Douiliez, Deputy Chair of Europe and Central Asia Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Head of AIDHR gave detailed information about the organization under his presidency. He also touched on state of human rights in Azerbaijan. In his remarks Mr. Shahidov mainly focused on the Azerbaijan citizens who became prisoners of war as a consequence of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

He also went on commenting on the issue of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev who were taken hostages by Armenian armed forces in July. Head of AIDHR conveyed Azerbaijanis deep concerns over this issue and stressed importance of intensified measures carried out by ICRC.

For her part, Carolina Douiliez, Deputy Chair of Europe and Central Asia Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross noted that she was aware of Azerbaijani hostages and up until now they had met with them for six times. Emphasizing their one on one meeting with Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev Mrs. Douiliez pointed out sensitivity of issue for Azerbaijani people. Recalling international convention of the International Committee of the Red Cross she voiced her hope to achieve progress on the issue of above mentioned hostages.

During the meeting Head of AIDHR presented the Book “Release us from capture” dedicated to the Azerbaijani citizens who became hostages during Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to ICRC official.
