The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan reiterates its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and declares that it does not recognize the so-called “presidential elections “conducted in Abkhazia, Georgia on August 24, 2014.
Recall that the Abkhazian region of Georgia was occupied by Russian-backed separatists in 1993 and has since been used by Moscow to put pressure on Tbilisi to deter Georgia from rapprochement with the West.
Moscow recognized the independence of Abkhazia, but the UN General Assembly stated that it is a territory of Georgia.
