Poland condemns politically motivated arrests of Azerbaijani activists

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland expresses concern over politically motivated arrests of Azerbaijani civil society activists. The statement of the press-service of the Polish MFA reads:

“We were especially dismayed by sanctions against the respected lawyer and human rights defender Intigam Aliyev, the civil society activists Leyla and Arif Yunus, Hasan Huseynli, Rasul Jafarov, the journalist Rauf Mirkadirov, as well as numerous activists of opposition parties and members of their families. The groundless charges give rise to serious concerns about political motives behind the arrests and detentions.

The violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of own citizens leads to more instability and social tensions, and presents an obstacle to cooperation in the European dimension. We call on Azerbaijan’s authorities to put an end to repression against civil society activists, opposition politicians and their families, and to respect obligations arising from the membership of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the UN.”
