“The purpose of the “Alarming NGO network” is to settle by joint efforts the problems of NGOs facing sanctions authorities. Today, the authorities apply open sanctions against civil society. Thus, grants are not registered, and conducting activities is banned. Many NGOs leaders are summoned for questioning to the prosecutor, a member of “Alarming NGO network”, the chairman of the Public Association for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Elchin Abdullayev, told Turan.

According to him, bank accounts of about 20 NGOs have been frozen. “In reality, the number of NGOs whose accounts have been frozen, is more. Thus, the accounts of NGOs led by Mirvari Gahramanli, Zohrab Ismail, Gubad Ibadoglu and other famous people have been frozen,” said Abdullayev.

“Alarming NGO network” will fight by all means provided by the law. “We appeal to the President, international organizations, ambassadors and heads of the leading countries in the world. We want the President to meet with NGOs and cooperation with the Council on State Support to NGOs to address the problems,” said Abdullayev.

At the same time, activists intend to picket in front of the presidential administration, the Ministry of Justice and the Central Bank.

According to Abdullayev, the negative effect of pressure on NGOs is already obvious. “Some NGO activists have refrained from fighting, others leave the country. If the pressure continues on, it would be impossible to speak about the activities of NGOs in this country,” said Abdullayev. According to statistics, 3,000 NGOs were registered in the country, another 2,000 NGOs were not registered.

“Approximately 1,500 of registered NGOs were subject to sanctions of the Ministry of Finance were for failure to provide annual reporting. According to the website of Ministry of Justice, only 300-350 NGOs really fucntion. Thus, 250 of them are pro-governmental. Thus, the talk is about 50 independent NGOs, of which about 20 are most active,” said Abdullayev.
