The Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Mirzali Abbasov ended June 27 consideration of the appeal by the editor of the azadxeber.org website Nijat Aliyev and 9 others convicted of illegal possession of drugs and weapons, inciting sectarian strife, calls for the seizure of power , distributing banned religious literature.

The Court upheld the verdict unchanged, the lawyer Yalcin Imanov told Turan.

Relatives of the defendants received the sentence with shouts “Allahu Akbar!” The defendants refused of the last word and received the decision calmly.

The defense considers the court’s decision unjust and intends to file an appeal.

Recall that they were charged with distribution of video criticism against holding of Eurovision SC and Gay Pride in Baku.

The investigation saw in the footage anti-government appeals, signs inciting sectarian strife, etc.

The court sentenced Nijat Aliyev to 10 years in prison, Elvin Nasirov to 9 years, Emin Tofigi to 3 years and 2 months, Samir Huseynov to 6 years, Elimkhan Huseynov to 7 years, Jeyhun Safarli to 9 years and 4 months, Korkmaz Jamalov to 7 years, Ali Aliyev to 4 years, Valeh Abdullayev to 8 years, and Safar Mammadov to 3 years and 4 months imprisonment.

The lawyer Yalcin Imanov said his client was being persecuted for freedom of expression. All the charges were fabricated and the drugs were planted.

In the video footage, there is no evidence of a crime.

The lawyer also noted that the young people were incriminated creation of an organized criminal group, but many of them did not know each other before their arrest.
