Ahmad Shahidov spoke about the Azerbaijani captives and hostages at the international conference in London
Coordinator of Information Center for Azerbaijani Captives and Hostages, human rights defender Ahmad Shahidov took part in an international conference titled “Uniting for Peace Conference 2019” held in London, UK, on April 8. Members of the British Parliament, members of various political parties, representatives of the British media, public and political figures talked about global issues of concern to humanity and discussed the ways of combating small and large conflicts, terrorism and separatism.
Speaking on the panel “Conflicts and the road to peace”, human rights defender Ahmad Shahidov talked about the conflicts around the world, spoke about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict facing Azerbaijan, informed about the Azerbaijani IDPs, as well as the captives and hostages. Reminding that the United Kingdom is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the human rights defender has noticed that the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the immediate release of the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas have not been implemented yet.
Ahmad Shahidov said that the United Kingdom should have more active and flexible policy for the establishment of peace in the world, and urged conference participants to condemn international terrorism and separatism: “My country has a population of 10 million, and one in every 10 people in Azerbaijan lives in a refugee life. Today, international terrorism and separatism, which disturbs the whole world, are still targeting Azerbaijan since 1988. 20% territories of our country is under occupation and we have 1 million refugees. Today, 3888 Azerbaijanis are considered captives, missing persons and hostages. We have no information of their lives. As a human rights defender, I appeal to you to hear our voices and to contribute to peace.”
