A solemn ceremony dedicated to 28 May – Day of the Republic held in Cyprus
On May 28, a ceremony was held to mark the 28 May – Republic Day of Azerbaijan in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Ceremony, organized by the Azerbaijan-Cyprus Youths Organization and Reformist Youths Public Union, was attended by officials, parliamentarians and media representatives of Northern Cyprus, as well as the authority of Eastern Mediterranean University, Azerbaijani and foreign students studying in Cyprus.
Opening the ceremony, Chairman of Azerbaijan-Cyprus Youths Organization Mr. Togrul Abbasov welcomed the guests and briefed about the history of Republic Day of Azerbaijan. Later, speaking about the activity of Azerbaijani students studying in Cyprus, Togrul Abbasov informed about the work done for promotion of Azerbaijan in Cyprus.
Chairman of the largest organisation of Northern Cyprus – Rauf Raif Denktash and Thoughts Sustenance Association Mr. Latif Akcha in his speech touched on the relations between Azerbaijan and Cyprus and said that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is particular important for Cyprus as well.
Later, Chairman of Reformist Youths Public Union Mr. Farid Shahbazli stressed the importance of further joint activities of young people from Azerbaijan and Cyprus and underlined the importance of mobilizing all possibilities in this direction.
Head of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Shahidov gave information about the history of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared in 1918 and mentioned Turkey’s support to Azerbaijan throughout the history. Shared the memories of his acquaintance with Cyprus, Ahmad Shahidov talked about his meeting with Rauf Raif Denktash late in 1999 and said that there was only after that he loved Cyprus. Human Rights Defender stressed that it is important for Azerbaijan, Turkey and Northern Cyprus to speak with one voice in all international platforms. He urged specially young people to be more active in this area.
Then, Member of Northern Cyprus’s Parliament Mr. Zorlu Tore, Vice-rector of Eastern Mediterranean University Prof. Dr. Jem Tanova, Representative of SOCAR Mr. Ramin Guliyev and others spoke about the role of youths in the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Cyprus.
Surprise guest of the event privately came from Baku, the Honored Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Head of Art Academy, famous artist Mrs. Aybaniz Hashimova performed a concert and presented her patriotic songs praising Azerbaijan. Popular member of “Bulbuller” music group Mr. Tarlan Eyvazov showed his excellent performance as well.
