Qatar to host international conference of ombudsmen and human rights activists from Muslim countries

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the High Commissioner for Human Rights organised in Doha an international conference on “Human rights-based approach to conflict situations in the Arab region” on February 20 and 21. Held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, and in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, the conference addressed several challenging issues and human rights situations in several countries across the Arab region.

The conference brought together about 500 participants, including government officials, representatives from United Nations peacekeeping missions, international and regional organisations, as well as human rights institutions, policy researchers, experts from treaty bodies, UN special rapporteurs and representatives from offices of the high commissioner for human rights in the Arab region. The conference aims to promote human rights approach in addressing conflict situations and crises in the world.

Participated in the event, Head of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Shahidov have been in close contact with the ombudsmen and human rights activists from Muslim countries and spoke about the problems facing Azerbaijan. Human rights defender Ahmad Shahidov raised the issue of Azerbaijani hostages and asked Arab countries to keep this issue on the agenda.
