Stefan Fule: We are seriously concerned about the situation

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule had a Monday evening meeting with a group of civil society representatives in Baku.

He expressed concern about the current situation and the facts of restrictions on human rights in Azerbaijan.

“The European Union admires your dedication, despite the restriction you are facing. We are watching closely the situation of the human rights activists and the whole Civil Society. We have repeatedly expressed our concerns at the changes to the NGO legislation, as well as the arrests and sentencing of so many prominent members of civil society,” said Fule.

He stressed the importance and necessity of public debate, without which there cannot be a stable democratic society.

“That’s why we have been and will be supporting you, that is why we have been and will be engaging in the dialogue with the Civil Society in Azerbaijan,” Fule said, adding that the European Union has decided to allocate 3 million Euros to support civil society organizations working in the field of human rights and democracy.

During the closed meeting, representatives of NGOs presented their problems to the Commissioner and had an exchange of views on overcoming the current difficult period.
