Court upheld Rasul Jafarov custody

Today the Nasimi District Court under the chairmanship of Shalala Hasanova considered the application of the human rights activist Rasul Jafarov to replace the measure of restraint by house arrest.

The judge did not grant the request, the lawyer Fariz Namazly said.

The investigation argued its position, saying that Jafarov may hide and falsify the evidence.

Jafarov said the invalidity of these arguments, noting that he is being persecuted for his human rights activities.

The lawyer will submit an appeal against the decision.

Jafarov was arrested on 2 August. The same day, the Nasimi District Court arrested him for three months.

The prosecutors filed charges against the human rights defender under three articles of the Criminal Code: 192, 213 and 308 – tax evasion, illegal business and malpractice.
