Judge evicts Ilgar Mammadov from the court hall

Today Sheki Court of Appeal considered the appeal on Ismayilli events in 2013.

In March 2013 the Sheki Court convicted 18 people for participating and organizing riots in the region of Ismayilly in January of the same year. Among those convicted is also leader of the REAL Movement, Ilgar Mammadov and deputy chairman of the “Musavat” Tofiq Yagublu.

On May 22 the European Court of Human Rights found a violation of Mammadov’s rights in several Articles of the Convention of Human Rights, and ordered him to pay his 22 thousand Euros compensation.

Immediately after the arrest Ilgar Mammadov and Tofiq Yagublu were recognized by international organizations as prisoners of conscience.

At today’s trial judge reproached attorneys for not wearing mantle. This was followed by replica from Tofiq Yagublu: “Let the judges come even in shorts, but make fair decisions.”

Lawyers petitioned for conducting photo and video capture of the trial.

Lawyer Fuad Agayev recalled the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Ilgar Mammadov, but prosecutor said that this decision relates to the previous solution, and does not relate to the current trial. This caused outrage of Ilgar Mammadov, who said the prosecutor: “You have long been disgraced before the world.” It caused a squabble between Mammadov and judges, and the defendant was removed from the hall.

The hearing will continue on 13 August.
