Azerbaijan does not comply with EU guidelines on Human Rights Defenders
The Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, with the support of the European Commission will visit Azerbaijan to monitor the situation with NGOs.
We are talking about the pressure on the civilian sector, which began after the introduction of restrictive amendments in Azerbaijan’s legislation, which opened the way for the suppression of NGOs and paralysis of their activities.
The Ukrainian delegation held meetings with leaders of a number of NGOs and journalists, according to a release sent to Turan.
The Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties and the Human Rights Center of Azerbaijan act in partnership in the international platform Civil Solidarity.
Following the visit, the Ukrainian Centre will present a report to the international human rights community organizations.
In particular, it will reflect the facts of NGO non-registration, problems with the implementation of freedom of expression, difficulty in reporting by NGOs, increasing the punishment, etc.
It is noted that under the existing bureaucracy NGOs in the country cannot develop. A major problem is the persecution of civil society activists for political reasons.
The press release also reminded that Azerbaijan within the framework of Eastern Partnership has undertaken to the European Union Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders.
Moreover, Azerbaijan has a special responsibility for compliance with European norms for the creation of normal conditions for civil society as chairman of the Committee of Ministers.
