Arrested prominent human rights activist Rasul Jafarov

The human rights activist Rasul Jafarov has been detained. His lawyer Khalid Bagirov said he was summoned to the Investigation Department for Serious Crimes Prosecutor General’s Office and reported that Jafarov wants him to be his solicitor.

On July 31 Jafarov was called to this department and prosecutors questioned him as a witness in the case against a number of local and foreign NGOs. On the same day, his apartment was searched.

In the following days he was again summoned to the prosecutor’s office, and he presented the requested documents. Today, apparently, Jafarov was presented criminal charges.

* Jafarov has been engaged in human rights activities since 2006. He was an active participant in campaigning “Song for Democracy” and “Art for Democracy”, and advocated for the rights of political prisoners.

During the last session of the PACE Rasul Jafarov and several other human rights activists made ​​a report on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

At the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE in Baku a month ago Jafarov and others held a public hearing on the issues of civil society.

Both of these events generated a backlash in Baku. Authorities were literally furious with the PACE decision to appoint a special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
