AIDHR statement: “Arrest of rights advocate Hasan Huseynli left the civil society desperate”

Nizami court of Ganja city issued a final order concerning to the Hasan Huseynli case, Head of “Mature Citizen” Civic Education Center On July 14. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment on the accusation of hooliganism and illegal gun possession.

From the very beginning of the process Azerbaijani Institute for Democracy and Human Rights has been closely following the investigation and declares that arrest of Hasan Huseynli, one of the leading civil society members is ambiguous and needs to be strictly re-investigated.

AIDHR declares that accusation made against Hasan Huseynli who engaged in carrying out awareness activities among the young people does not have any ground as it’s unbelievable that he can injure someone with knife and this is why we express our concern on the decision of the court. Long term imprisonment issued against Hasan Huseynli who is known as an intellectual figure, disappointed not only his followers, relatives but also whole society and it was harsh blow to the civil society’s future development. Leaders of the NGOs having a focus on this field, that discouraged by this arrest want the case to be re-investigated and fair decision to be made. They consider it appropriate for Azerbaijani Government to apply new approaches to the case and arrive at a just decision.
AIDHR believes that supporting fundamental freedoms will further enhance long term stability and development in Azerbaijan.
